For those of you who "know", this rare fish print trimmed in alternating bands of the same fish print in red is simply one very rare find indeed. The black is very black, the red vibrant, altogether a masterpiece, and probably from the period in the 40s when Gilbert Adrian was influenced by Salvadore Dali and Schiaparelli; Dali created whimsical fabrics for textile manufacturer Wesley Simpson, perhaps this is one of the examples. FISH !!!! Both the top and the skirt sport free floating bands of red fishy fabric, front and back on the skirt, front as shown on the top, while the rest of the trim is skillfully inset into the black fish background. The details are simply perfection; the top snaps up the front and ties at the neck, side zipper on the skirt. Not visible in the pics is the very slight peplum construction at the waist. Altogether, worthy of the finest collection, and immensely wearable.Here's the downside (and depending on your sensibilites, perhaps the upside !). The previous owner was a perfectionist, but not a purist. She spared no expense in having this altered to fit, and it is a remarkable job of tailoring; HOWEVER, in her quest for perfection and wearability, she had the short cuff zippers and the skirt zipper replaced with hidden nylon zippers, and had the shoulder pads replaced also, again done expertly. So, while not original, and therefore "pure", this ensemble is actually more wearable and stable. I have found a few very faint spots that get lost in the print and would probably come out with a dry cleaning (though I don't trust mine with this museum piece), and one TEENY pinhole on the inner sleeve at the cuff area...otherwise , like new condition...this woman was truly fussy (I have many other pieces from her collection, and all are in pristine condition).MEASUREMENTS: Skirt waist, 26", hips to 36", length waist to hem, 27". Top waist to 28", bust to 38", center back length 24", sleeve length 23", 17” shoulder to shoulder.
